Jubilee government’s affordable housing project is set to receive Ksh64.7 billion from United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and its partners to construct at least 100, 000 units across the country.
The affordable housing agreement between Kenya andUNOPS is part of the UN agency’s Social Impact Investment Initiative (S3i).
The programme seeks to underline the UN’s commitment to fostering innovative financing for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UNOPS executive director Grete Faremo noted that the needs of local communities would be a key priority of the project.
The 100,000 houses are to be built using green technologies and energy efficient solar rooftops.
Faremo divulged that the project would include public facilities such as children’s playgrounds, schools and community halls.
Furthermore, the housing project will provide employment opportunities for local communities nationwide and help to alleviate the housing crisis in Kenya.
The total estimated Gross Development Value (GDV) for the project is expected to be around Ksh470 billion.
In September 2018, the government signed the deal with UNOPS in New York during the 73rd United Nations General Assembly.
Once fully implemented, the agreement will boost Kenya’s efforts towards the realization of the ambitious affordable housing agenda as outlined in the Government’s Big 4 development blueprint.
