Angry Police Officer Shoots and Kills Man After Losing Football Team

A man succumbed to gunshot injuries on Thursday morning at the Murang’a Level Five Hospital after he was shot three times by a police officer on Saturday.

Martin Waweru, a resident of Muruka Village in Kandara Constituency was allegedly shot by an Administration Police (AP) officer attached to Muruka AP camp while heading home from a local bar after a football match.

Reports indicate that the officer was infuriated after his favourite team, Chelsea, lost to Arsenal by two goals to nil.

In an interview with the Daily Nation on Wednesday, Waweru indicated that there was a scuffle between the officer and a small group of villagers while he was on his way out of the bar.

“Upon reaching where I was he ordered me to lie down and I obeyed. He then shot me three times at the back on my waist, above my back and on my hand.

"He then dragged me to the police camp which is 750 meters away and forced me to drink water while I was bleeding profusely,” Waweru narrated.

He further added that attempts by other residents to rush him to hospital were futile after the alleged offender and two colleagues insisted that he be ferried by a police van.

The victim also informed that he lost Ksh 30,000, including money for his business amounting to Ksh 10,000 and another Ksh 20,000 from his two weeks’ salary.

His wife, Rose Muthoni indicated that she heard the gunshots while at home only to later discover that her husband was the victim of the shooting.

“The police officer admitted that he shot my husband but instead of being arrested and charged with murder he has been transferred and I don't think my late husband who was the only source of income to my family will ever get justice… I urge the government agencies and the Director of Public Prosecutions to intervene,” Muthoni lamented.

Hours after the interview, Waweru passed on at around 4am on Thursday morning.

Kandara OCPD Wilson Kosgey communicated, "We have launched investigations into the matter and we invite IPOA to take over but preliminary investigations have shown that there was no justifiable reason that could have led to the shooting of the man since he was not a threat to the police officer".
