The Multi-Agency Task Team (MATT) has recovered assets worth more than Kshs 3 billion, acquired with graft money, since its formation in 2018.
The team headed by Attorney General Paul Kihara also recovered Ksh2.5 billion worth of taxes from corruption-related cases.
Speaking during the National Anti-Corruption Conference on Thursday, Kihara mentioned that 549 corruption-related cases had been prosecuted from 2013-2018.
“These cases involve high-level and private sector leaders including Cabinet Secretaries, governors, Principal Secretaries, MPs, heads of State corporations, Judiciary and constitutional commissions and in some cases banks,” he mentioned.
Ethics and Anti-Corruption boss Twalib Mbarak disclosed he would take a multi-faceted approach, including the recovery of assets in the fight against graft.
“We have cases dealing with assets recovery worth over Kshs 20 billion right now before the court, but we are going at a very slow rate,” Mbarak stated.
He further revealed they are in the process of giving back a Ksh1.6 billion recovered plot to the University of Nairobi.
The anti-graft boss promised that after 100 days in office, people will see a huge difference that will start with the unclogging of cases.
“We have over 600 cases before the court, not more than 15 per cent of those cases have been determined as they are stuck,” he lamented.
MATT, established in June 2018, includes the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the AG's office, National Intelligence Service (NIS) and Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Also in the task force is Anti-Money Laundering Unit, the Asset Recovery Agency, Banking Fraud Investigation Unit, Financial Reporting Centre, Kenya Revenue Authority, Cyber-Crime Unit and Anti-Counterfeit Agency.
