Uhuru’s Govt Unveils 1.6Km Bridge That Cost KShs1B

President Uhuru Kenyatta, through the Presidential Delivery Unit team, on Saturday, unveiled a new bridge.

The 1.6Km stretch cost KShs1.06 billion of taxpayers money.

The team revealed that the now completed bridge was designed to last for the next 100 years.

The bridge connects Mbita town to Rusinga Island in Homa Bay County.

Uhuru commissioned for the construction of the bridge in July 2017 as a way of giving back to the people of Nyanza especially at the time when the opposition faulted the state of neglecting its people.

The infrastructure replaced an old causeway that had been built in 1983 which was reportedly blocking the flow of water hence reducing fish population, a delicacy of the area’s residents.

Addressing residents during the commissioning, Uhuru promised that the bridge would be the beginning of numerous other projects with road constructions set to follow.

The construction of the bridge reportedly commenced in 2013 sponsored by the Spanish Government but was halted in 2014 due to design changes.

The bridge was redesigned in order to allow ferries and water vessels, with a width of 40m and a maximum height of 8m, to pass underneath after residents complained of deaths at the point due to the previous design.

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo, reportedly, lost her father, Harrison Odhiambo, in a boat accident in those waters in 1973 a year before he could vie for a parliamentary seat in 1974.
