Daring Officers Who Stole Millions From President Moi's Home

Police officers that were guarding former President Daniel Moi's home once broke in and made away with millions.

Just months to the 1997 General Elections, they entered the Kabarak house and made away with the loot undetected.

The guards who had been on duty Corporals J. Cheruiyot, Samuel Mutai, Eric Munai, Paul Kiptalam and Justus Nzioka, were later arrested and charged for deserting duty.

The government did its best to downplay the matter and withdrew the case after Moi's order.

The former president indicated that he was willing to let matters rest as long as he got his money back.

The head of the security team, Stephen Sang', was then transferred to Hola, Tana River which was known to be a very hostile place, possibly as punishment for the incident.

Former State House Comptroller, Franklin Bett, told Nation that the act of the president's own service team stealing from him angered Moi but he did not overreact.

"But he was very lenient...any other person would have dealt with them ruthlessly," recalled Bett.

The theft was not the only security breach at Moi's home.

In 1999, a golden cockerel was reported to have been stolen from his bedroom.
