Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has accused Deputy President William Ruto of being behind the recent accusations of his involvement in drug trafficking.
During a rally at Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums in Nairobi on Monday, Joho dared Ruto to a faceoff and urged him to stop using sidekicks to attack him.
"I cannot engage in a war of words with those people because I know they have been sent by their master Willam Ruto," he stated.
Joho had warned to take legal action against Nandi Governor Stephen Sang’, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa, Didmus Barasa (Kimilili) and Oscar Sudi (Kapsaret) for alleging that he was a drug lord.
During a presser at Parliament Buildings on January 28, the three leaders claimed Joho uses his position to advance and cover up his illicit business of drug trafficking.
After the warning, Sudi, however, insisted that he would not apologise to Joho over the narcotics slur.
Instead, the legislator asked the ODM Deputy Party Leader to call a presser and apologise to Kenyans and the people of Mombasa for engaging in an unlawful business.
According to The Standard, the Mombasa County boss wrote to Interpol to clarify reports linking Joho to an international drug network.
In November 2018, a letter emerged online, allegedly from the international police organisation, listing the governor as a fugitive on Interpol's radar.
"It is therefore in our client's interest, the interests of all residents of the county of Mombasa and the nation as a whole that your office informs us on the authenticity or lack thereof of the statement," read Joho's request to Interpol.
