Lamu was, on Wednesday, ranked seventh among top 10 richest counties in Kenya.

The others include Nairobi, Mombasa, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Elgeyo Marakwet, Machakos, Nakuru, Kisumu and Nyeri in that order.

The counties were ranked based on data provided by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) dubbed "Gross County Product (GCP)" which is basically the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of counties.

Speaking during the launch of GCP, Commission for Revenue Allocation (CRA) Chairperson Dr Jane Kiringai revealed that the data will be used to determine revenue sharing in the counties.

The event, which was attended by representatives from the World Bank, was the first time statistics on the Kenyan counties’ contribution to the GDP were availed.

The statistics covered the supply side of the economy comprising Manufacturing, Agriculture and Service sectors for the period 2013-2017.

World Bank Program Leader Yohan Mistiean congratulated KNBS for the effort to produce the data.

In the report, Bungoma, Tharaka Nithi, Nyandarua, Elgeyo Marakwet, Siaya and Nyeri were hailed for growing faster than the average per capita GCP across all counties.

Management of the programme further revealed that the report would be published annually from now henceforth.
