Court Locks Up 6 Suspects in Carol Mwatha's Murder Case

The court, on Wednesday, ordered six suspects in the murder of activist Caroline Mwatha be locked up for their own safety.

The six; Betty Akinyi, Richard Ramoya Abudo, Georgia Achieng' Tabitha, Michael Ochiri, Alexander Gitau Gikonya and Stephen Maina will be detained for 14 more days for security reasons and to allow police investigations.

The DCI confirmed that the six had been apprehended in relation to the activist's murder whom the police alleged died in a botched abortion.

In a statement issued after her body was found at City Mortuary, the investigative authorities urged members of the public to be patient as they tried to unravel the mystery.

"The said woman was last seen on February 6 by her relatives. DCI officers launched investigations and it was established that she was in constant communication with one Alexander Gitau Gikonya who is known to be working in Isiolo County," the DCI noted.

According to the DCI, the communications with Alex indicated that the deceased intended to procure an abortion for a 5-month-old pregnancy.

"Investigators believe that Caroline died in the clinic and the body was transferred to the Nairobi City Mortuary on February 7, 2019, at 4:42am according to the records," the crime investigators added.

In a presser issued shortly after viewing the body, Mwatha's family, however, maintained that she was killed by unknown assailants due to her work as a human rights activist.

The family of the deceased poked holes in the abortion narrative put forth by the police.

Her family pointed out that the activist's body had two deep cuts, one on the thigh and another one on the neck.

The cut which was about five inches long reportedly appeared to had been inflicted by a sharp object and there was blood from the wound.
