Police Car Hits Activist While Transporting Mwatha’s Body For Postmortem

Chaos erupted on Mbagathi Way on Thursday afternoon after a police vehicle hit an activist while transferring Caroline Mwatha Ochieng’s body from City Mortuary to Umash Funeral Home.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, a Human Rights activist identified as Winnie Obure is seen lying on the road after reportedly being hit by a police vehicle.

Following the hit and run incident, the people at the scene were angered as the police reportedly showed disregard and sped off.

Earlier in the day, a scheduled post-mortem on the body failed owing to the on-going strike by Nairobi County workers including those attached to City Mortuary.

Chief Government Pathologist, Johansen Oduor, had on Thursday arrived at City Mortuary at around 10am only to find the morgue attendants missing.

Oduor was forced to open the door to the mortuary by himself while police officers kept a close look.

Soon after, transportation was organized under the supervision of the police to have the body taken to Umash where the postmortem was set to take place.

Both the government and family pathologists were present at City Mortuary during the transfer.

Soon, an entourage left the facility escorting Mwatha's body with a number of police vehicles with some of the activists blocking the way.

The government had proposed to defer the postmortem to Monday but Mwatha's family a were uncomfortable the developments.

This led to the proposal to move the body to a private facility where the autopsy operation could be conducted.
