Dennis Murithi, an 18-year-old Miuine Secondary School student sustained fatal injuries at the hands of his farm’s guard over the weekend in Igembe North, Meru County.
Local police had to come to the rescue of the 50-year-old guard as the locals were baying for his blood upon hearing the news of Murithi’s demise.
He succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment at the Maua Methodist Hospital.
The guard stands accused of fatally pounding the 18-year-old for allegedly picking miraa twigs on their farm, after mistakenly confusing him for a thief.
Igembe North police boss, David Kirui, revealed that the victim suffered severe injuries on the head, arms, and legs.
Margaret Kanene, the mother to the deceased, was inconsolable while narrating the story to The Nation.
She revealed that she had hired the guard in December 2018 to secure her miraa farm after her husbands’ passing on adding that he knew all her children and it was inconceivable that he was unable to identify Muriithi.
“My son, who was on mid-term break, was fetching fodder for the goats when he was attacked,” the distraught mother explained.
Officer Kirui affirmed that the suspect was now in custody and would be duly charged with murder once their investigations were complete.
The angry residents had rampaged through his compound and cut down several of his miraa trees before the police arrived and whisked him to the relative safety of the cell.
