Police in Ong'ata Rongai have launched investigations after five individuals were arrested with spent cartridges, police cuffs and a baton, raising fears of a gang posing as police officers to rob unsuspecting residents.
The arrests made on Wednesday during a night patrol along Gataka Road close to PEFA Church have raised new worries in the neighbourhood.
According to the statement by the National Police Service, on Thursday, September 18, two suspicious middle-aged men were arrested, and one of them led to the recovery of a pair of handcuffs in his pocket.
The officers said that the second suspect attempted to escape and was arrested after a brief pursuit.
The suspects, after the interrogations, alleged that they had obtained the items from another person, whose whereabouts were unknown to them.
Officers were then led by the suspects to the Kware area along the busy Magadi Road, where a thorough search of the premises resulted in the recovery of four spent cartridges and a police baton.
According to NPS, three other suspects were arrested during the patrol at the scene, while the items recovered were secured as exhibits.
It is, however, unclear whether the gang has a gun and whether they are keeping it hidden in a different hideout.
Police stated that the arrest and search were to ensure that the police's weapons are not misused to facilitate criminal activities.
“This operation highlights the need for constant vigilance and firm action by the National Police Service to ensure that tools which could be misused to facilitate violent crime are removed from the wrong hands and that those involved are brought to justice,” NPS stated.
The NPS appealed to members of the public to continue working closely with security agencies by sharing information on any suspicious activities.
In the recent incident, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Kirinyaga arrested a 37-year-old woman with several incriminating items in a raid targeting a gang terrorising Garissa residents.
According to the DCI, the woman was linked to the notorious gang that had stolen a Glock pistol from its last known victim.
