Blind Lecturer Who Doubles as Masseuse for a Living

A visually impaired lecturer who doubles as a masseuse is the exact definition of achieving success against all odds.

Evelyne Nzioki has worked as a masseuse for six years in Machakos where she charges Kshs 1,000 per hour and attends to four clients every day.

The masseuse also works as a lecturer at Machakos Technical Training Institute for the Blind where she acquired Japanese massage techniques.

“When I get a client, I do my best work. This way they can recommend their friends and family,” she revealed her technique for continuous workflow.

According to Nzioki, the massage helps relax muscles and regulate blood flow as well as prevent diseases such as diabetes, pressure, minor stroke while giving the client a good time to beat fatigue.

The institute has so far trained 30 students who have scored employment even in Nairobi City.

In 2007, they received volunteers from the Japan International Cooperation Agency who trained students with the unique technique known as Shiatsu.

Today, the institution relies on the pioneer class to pass the knowledge down to the newest students.

The institution is among the Technical and Vocational Education and Training  (TVETs) institutions the government is using to reduce unemployment rates in the country.

Nzioki is, however, appealing for formal employment of the institute's graduate by Machakos County.
