Unique Turkana Island Ruto's Pilot Visited Before Tragic Crash [PHOTOS]

DP William Ruto's pilot, Captain Mario Magonga, had ferried four Americans to Central Island National Park right in the middle of Lake Turkana where they met their unfortunate death after their helicopter crashed near Lobolo Camp.

The area is also known as Crocodile Island and undeniably has some unique features to its name.

Primarily, the island boasts of having the largest concentration of Nile crocodiles in the world.

The remote island looks like the other idyllic spots in Kenya. However, it is made up of three active volcanoes that are characterised by periodic burps of steam and smoke.

Central Island National Park has three crater lakes; Crocodile Lake, Tilapia Lake and Flamingo Lake.

Other than the crocodiles, the island is also home to many hippos and bats.

It also provides an ideal camping base for tourists who wish to learn the unique Turkana culture.

The island also has a forest and natural springs whose waters have brought about the establishment of an opulent oasis of foliage and other distinctive animal and birdlife.

Access to the camp is usually by helicopter by tourists albeit there are two all-weather airstrips.

The journey to the area in Turkana by road takes three days from Nairobi via Marsabit and North Horr or Maralal and South Horr.
