The Confederation of African Football, CAF, on Monday laid the groundwork for what will be a history-making tournament on the African Continent.
In what will be a continental first, 3 women will be allowed to officiate at the African Cup of Nations Under-17 tournament (AFCON U-17).
Kenya’s Mary Njoroge is set to be part of these groundbreaking women officials at the highly anticipated AFCON U-17, with Lidwine Rakotozafinoro (Madagascar) and Jonesia Kabakama (Tanzania) filling up the other spots.
These appointments were made following a CAF Referees Committee meeting held in Cairo with all the match officials required to attend a two-week training course in Morocco from the March 31, 2019.
“The historic decision is a testament to CAF’s commitment to developing the women’s football,” the continent's football governing body revealed in their statement.
Njoroge, a highly experienced football official, was named by CAF as part of the 29 officials chosen to oversee this year’s AFCON U-17 event set to be held at the National and Chamazi Stadia in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
Set to kick off on April 14, 2019, the tournament will feature 8 teams, with the final match scheduled to be held on April 28.
Kenyans.co.ke while speaking to Barry Otieno (Head of Communications and Marketing at Football Kenya Federation FKF), confirmed the appointment of Ms. Njoroge to the highly rated group of officials at the continental tournament.
Kenyan neighbours Uganda and hosts Tanzania were the only teams from the East African region to have qualified for the tournament.
Kenya, which was in the same group as Ethiopia and Uganda during qualifiers, did not make it to the knockout stages after finishing in third place.
