Iran Summons Kenyan Ambassador Over Nationals Jailed in Nairobi

Kenyan ambassador to Iran, Rukia Ahmed Subow, was on Saturday reportedly summoned by the country's Foreign Ministry over its citizen locked up in Nairobi.

It is reported that Iran's Foreign Ministry's director general for African affairs officially complained to Kenya's ambassador over its dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court ruling.

The Supreme Court on Friday overturned a decision to free two Iranian nationals, Ahmad Abolfathi and Seyyed Mansour Mousavi jailed over terror charges.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi was on Sunday quoted stating that the Islamic Republic dimmed the ruling "unfair".

The Court of Appeal had acquitted the two Iranians sentenced to 15 years after they were found guilty of three terrorism-related charges.

According to the Iranian spokesperson, the Kenyan ambassador would inform Kenya's government about his country's protest and dissatisfaction as reported by Nation.

In 2016, a Kenyan judge reduced the life sentences given to the two suspects convicted of planning bomb attacks to 15 years.

The two Iranians were arrested in June 2012 and convicted a year later of planning attacks and possessing 15 kg of military-grade RDX explosives.

Kenyan investigators revealed that the men may have had links to the Quds Force, the elite extra-territorial special forces arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

The men were scheduled to be freed before the Supreme Court upheld their sentences.
