Chaos on Kiambu Road as Ekeza Sacco Members Engage Police in Running Battles

Ekeza Sacco members engaged in running battles with police officers outside the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Monday.

The members had gathered outside the DCI offices from as early as 7 a.m. following the directive issued by the investigations agency that any aggrieved members of the Ekeza Sacco saga report to the headquarters to record their statement.

Visibly angry members queued for hours, hoping that they would each get their chance to air the issues in pursuit of justice.

However, the long wait outside the DCI offices turned chaotic as some individuals blocked the busy Kiambu road using boulders and rocks.

Reports from NTV journalists on the ground indicated that the gathering turned into a protest following an order given by the DCI asking them to return on a later date to record statements.

Police were then called in to disperse the crowd that had turned rowdy in order to ease traffic along Kiambu road.

Videos recorded at the scene showed that the security officers firing teargas canisters in their attempt to take control of the situation which was seemingly getting out of hand.

The DCI had called on all Ekeza Sacco members from Nairobi and Kiambu counties to avail themselves, with both counties estimated to host at least 60,000 members.

Motorists were diverted and advised to seek alternative routes as the police cleared the boulder-laden road.
