Passengers Arrest Driver for Reckless Driving

A group of passengers travelling from Kakamega to Nairobi on Sunday night were forced to take matters into their hands in fear for their lives.

The passengers took their bus driver, whom they accused of reckless driving, into custody and handed him over to police.

Reports revealed that the suspect was driving over the stipulated limit and ignored calls by the passengers to slow down.

“When we approached the steep road after Riat in Kisumu, I knew we were done for,” Maurine Odari (one of the passengers) told The Standard.

Harizon Wechuli (one of the commuters), alongside several others, made their way to the front of the bus to try and take control of the situation before it led to any fatalities.

As per the statements made by the passengers, they accosted the driver just before getting to Mamboleo roundabout, where they pushed him off the bus, brought it to a stop, restrained him and called the police.

“We had to act or perish. The driver seemed unfit to drive. We literally had to lift him from the driver’s seat,” Mr Wechuli divulged.

The police reportedly arrived past the midnight hour and took the driver into custody before impounding the vehicle.

By this time, the bus conductor had already slipped away during the commotion and fled the scene.

The officers allowed the stranded passengers to make their way to Mamboleo Police Station where they would wait for daylight in order to find alternatives means to Nairobi.

In a bizarre twist, the owner of the vehicle, Anderson Odak, claimed that it wasn’t supposed to be on the road but rather at a car yard where it was set to be viewed by potential buyers.

The driver, on the other hand, denied ever driving the bus when questioned in the morning.
