Man Who Spent Ksh1M on Son's Birthday Now Can't Afford Ksh100K Bond

A Kisumu businessman cum politician has been detained at the Kodiaga prison after he failed to raise Ksh 100,000 bond which he had committed to a Kisumu court in order to secure the release of a friend.

Douglas Otieno Owila bust into the limelight in September 2016 after he spent approximately Ksh1.2 million for his son’s first birthday.

The celebration allegedly went on for three days.

Owila, a former Migosi ward MCA aspirant had initially deposited his motorbike valued at the said amount but sold it as the case continued.

When the suspect, who is a woman accused of ‘accidentally’ burning daughter to death with hot water, absconded court proceedings, the court went after Owila who was the guarantor.

The woman whom Owila had guaranteed was a neighbour.

He was ordered to raise the money in two days which elapsed on Tuesday.

As reported by Citizen Digital, by the time the deadline was due, family and friends had pooled together and raised Ksh 80,000, of which Ksh 45,000 was from the family.

By Wednesday, a day after the deadline issued by the court, Owila was still being detained.

A month after the extravagant party in 2016, reports started emerging of trouble for Owila as he was unable to pay his rent which had risen to over Ksh118,000 and the landlord had to kick him out.
