Ex-Judge Charles Kanyangi Who Sold Kisumu Courts Land Suffers Blow in New Ruling

A former judge, Charles Kanyangi, who was sued for grabbing and selling land on which courts of law stand, has been dealt another blow according to the latest ruling.

In a ruling on Wednesday, a law court ordered the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to repossess the land on which Kisumu law courts stand.

EACC had accused Kanyangi of illegally acquiring the land before selling it off.

Kanyangi is a career lawyer whose experience spans 24 years and has previously served as a magistrate in Kakamega, Kitale, Kisumu, Busia and Nyahururu.

This is part of the conquests made by the government regarding their grabbed pieces of land belonging to courts in the recent past.

In 2012, the Judiciary regained ownership of 1.47 hectares of land that had been illegally acquired by a private developer in Mombasa.

The then Chief Justice, Willy Mutunga, received the title deed to the parcel belonging to Mombasa High Court after the Ministry of Lands revoked its allocation.

At the time, the then Minister of Lands James Orengo revealed that they had recovered close to 1000 parcels of illegally acquired land with 11 belonging to the Judiciary.

“Today we will hand over to you a title of land belonging to the Judiciary as it was irregularly given to private individuals. This we believe will increase the capacity for the Judiciary to construct courts and other required structures,” stated Orengo.
