Emotions Run High as Body of Doctor Who Died in Cuba Arrives Home

The body of the late Dr Ali Hamisi Juma, the Kenyan doctor who died in Cuba under mysterious circumstances made its way home on Friday.

His body landed at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa during the morning hours where a crowd had gathered to pay their last respects.

Likoni MP, Mishi Mboko, sister to the recently deceased, who was also present at the airport, broke down as she took possession of his body in order to make necessary arrangements.

Other family members, close friends, politicians and senior officials of the Mombasa County government were also at the airport to receive the body.

Reports revealed that the body was then taken to the Coast Provincial General Hospital for an autopsy by a private pathologist.

This was in line with Hamisi Kurichwa’s - an elder brother to the doctor, who stated that they would be seeking an independent autopsy in hopes of figuring out what exactly caused the untimely death of their brother.

An article by the Daily Nation stated that Dr Juma, a postgraduate diploma student in family medicine, died by suicide after he was denied clearance to visit his family in Kenya.

Earlier on Wednesday, Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka, directed the House Committee on Health, chaired by Trans Nzoia Senator Michel Mbito, to look into the matter and table a report in under two weeks

The late Dr Juma was one of the 50 Kenyan doctors sponsored by the government to study family medicine in Cuba in an exchange programme.

In line with Islamic law, the late Dr Juma will be laid to rest at Shikadabu Likoni, after the 4 pm Friday prayers.
