City Hall Issues Cholera Outbreak Alert in Nairobi

The County Government of Nairobi, on Friday, issued an alert warning of cholera outbreak in the city.

Through a letter dated March 21, Nairobi County Director of Health Lucina Koyio advised all county medical superintendents that the outbreak was spreading fast in all sub-counties in the city.

As a result, the letter cautioned residents to avoid roadside eateries and maintain the highest level of hygiene.

Nairobi hospitals were also advised to activate their cholera wings to accommodate the expected increase in cases over the disease.

“The county is experiencing a wave of cholera outbreak which was confirmed on March 20, 2019. In this regard, I am requesting all referral hospitals to reactivate their cholera treatment units to prevent the spread of the disease.

“All sub-counties should be on high alert and treat all suspected cases of cholera as cholera cases. Please also reactivate your sub county response teams,” wrote Koyio.

Daily Nation reported that two cases had already tested positive with 18 other people recorded suffering servere stomach pains and diarrhoea suspected of having Cholera.

The two cases were, however, reported to have come from Baringo County where a cholera outbreak alert had also been issued.

Areas placed on high alert include Donholm, Nyayo Estate, Tassia, Avenue 1-3, Pipeline, South B and their surrounding areas.

Cholera is a bacterial disease spread through contaminated water and often causes severe diarrhoea and dehydration.
