Nairobi Judge Scolds Police for Detaining Pregnant Woman in Labour

Police officers in a Nairobi court were, on Tuesday, given an earful by a frustrated Nairobi judge after they detained a pregnant woman.

The Star reported that Makadara chief magistrate Heston Nyagah was disappointed with the officers after he discovered that the woman, Tabitha Wanjiru, had been detained despite the fact fact she was about to deliver.

It was also revealed that Wanjiru had crawled into the court and that the officers did not give her a bond following her condition.

"How can an officer detain a woman who is almost giving birth in police cells?

"It is not logical, just because she fought with someone. Let's be humane sometimes," stated Nyaga.

The judge, subsequently, released her on a free bond without subjecting her to taking a plea and ordered the officers to take her to a hospital immediately.

The prosecution team also agreed with the judge's decision allowing the woman to get treatment before appearing before the court in a month's time.

Wanjiru was arrested alongside her neighbour, Joyce Mwangi, after they were accused of fighting in a public space in Dandora on March 13.

According to a police report, the two women shared a tap and on the fateful day, Wanjiru was washing her dishes by the tap when Ms Mwangi showed up and turned it off.

This culminated into an argument resulting into a fight. After they reported the matter to the police station, the matter was investigated and the two were subsequently arrested.

The case is set for mentioning on April 26.
