The 44th President of the United States of America, Barrack Hussein Obama once gifted his grandmother, Sarah Obama, a cardigan at her rural home in Kogelo, Siaya county.
In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, an enthusiastic young Obama is seen trying to help his grandmother put on the sweater.
He humorously tells her that even though it is hot outside, she still had to try it on just to make sure that it fits.
After she puts it on, Obama is seemingly amused and speaks a little Luo, “berr”, to mean that it fit her perfectly well.
They finally embrace and his grandmother welcomes him to her hut as they chat on.
Obama has previously visited his late father Barack Obama Senior's ancestral home on three occasions.
Keen to understand his father's homeland and meet his Kenyan relatives, he first flew into Kenya as a young community organiser in 1987.
“I visited my father’s grave and it gave me a sense of satisfaction that no five-star hotels could ever provide because it connected you to your past and the stories of those who came before you. It grounded you and gave you a sense of place that then fortified you for the future,” the ex-US president was once quoted speaking about his maiden trip to Kenya.
The second time he visited Kogelo was in August 2006 when he jetted in as the Illinois Senator.
The third time he visited his father’s ancestral home in Alego was in 2018 when he opened a sports facility for disadvantaged children under Sauti Kuu Foundation. An initiative of his sister Dr. Auma Obama who termed it as a fulfillment of their father’s dream.
The other time the former US president visited Kenya was in 2015 when he became the first sitting US president to ever step foot in the country.
