Man Commits Suicide With 2-month ARV Drugs & 5L Pesticide

A man reportedly took his own life last week by consuming 2-month worth of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs and 5 litres of pesticide following a trip to the hospital.

Henry Mesha, the 28-year-old deceased, is believed to have committed suicide upon testing HIV positive after going to the hospital complaining of chest pains.

Joyce Kemunto (the late Mesha's neighbour) may have been the last person to have seen him alive as he hurriedly made his way to his home in Pipeline estate to end his life.

“I saw him on the fateful day being ferried by a motorbike from the stage, 200 metres away from his house, which was uncharacteristic of him, but I could not imagine that he was rushing home to take his life,” she told The Standard.

Mr Mesha had earlier on called his sister and informed her that he was heading to Mbagathi Hospital for a check-up as was experiencing severe chest pains.

However, several hours later, test results revealed that his ailments were all linked to the HIV virus, a diagnosis that seemingly caught him off-guard, throwing him on a downward spiral.

He was reportedly given 2-month's worth of ARV's prescription after which he switched his phone off and hurriedly headed home, hell-bent on taking his own life.

Mr Mesha worked in the laundry department at a city hotel is said to have taken all the HIV drugs plus antibiotics. and washed them down with 5 litres of pesticide.

Reports by The Standard claimed that the deceased had bought the pesticide at a nearby shopping centre before rushing home.

Two empty tins of ARV drugs, an empty 500ml bottle of insecticide and an empty five-litre container smelling of insecticide were found next to this corpse.

Mesha's family have laid the blame squarely at the hospital for what they claim to be a failure to counsel him. On the other hand, the hospital allegedly claimed that they couldn't verify the details of the suicide victim.
