Homa Bay Women Rep Gladys Wanga Was Suspended for 1 Year for Leading

Outspoken Homa Bay Women Representative Gladys Wanga began her social justice activism way back when she was a student at Kisumu Girls High School.

Speaking in a candid interview with a reporter from The Standard, Wanga lay it bare on how she was suspended from school for one year for allegedly leading a prefects' go slow.

She stated that despite it being a collective agreement, she was pointed out as the ringleader when it came to questioning.

According to her, she felt that the teachers were being disrespectful to prefects, herself being one, and that’s when they started to rebel.

That day, there were no prefects at the gate to nab latecomers, and no prefects supervising daily school activities, which meant that chores were either not being done or not being perfectly executed.

Furthermore, the prefects had also stopped wearing the blue blouses that set them apart from the other students.

The 37-year-old lawmaker added that she was forced to spend her entire Third Form at home, studying with the help of tutors her father hired.

Interestingly, Wanga seems to have followed in her father John Nyasuna's footsteps who was a councilor and chairperson of Kisumu County Council.

She recalled that in 1992 when her father was running for the Muhoroni parliamentary seat, she got upset and broke down when she found out that he’d stepped aside for another candidate.

The mother of two also revealed that she became the Secretary-General of the Student’s Union at Kenyatta University, where she met her husband, George Wanga.
