Govt Steps in to Solve Kakamega 'Twins' Mystery

The government's medical research institute (Kemri) has offered to fund a DNA test on the two Kakamega girls who are believed to have been separated at birth.

Melon Lutenyo and Sharon Mathias, whose story has caused a stir after they recently met for the first time in 20 years, had issued a plea for well-wishers to help in raising funds for a DNA test.

Kemri director, Professor Sam Kariuki, has since come out and offered to fuly fund the test.

“This is a matter of public interest, and to bring it to closure for the interested parties Kemri will be willing to offer DNA services if requested,” he disclosed to the Daily Nation on Wednesday.

The parents of Melon & Mevies (the two sisters who were raised in Kakamega) - Richard Olukhakha and Rosemary Onyango, told the Standard that their world was spinning out of control ever since the news that another gir,- Sharon, was a spitting image of one of their daughters.

In a bizarre twist of fate, both girls are set to sit for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education this year, both are studying in Kakamega, both dont eat omena and matumbo (tripe) and both have a close male friend called Willis.

Mr Olukhakha revealed that he had taken all three girls to a clinic in Kitale and was surprised when results showed that they all belonged to the 'O' positive blood group just like him.

Sharon's mother, Angeline Omina, while speaking to the Standard at her Kangemi home revealed her insecurities and fear of facing the possibility that Sharon may not be her biological daughter.

"I love this child so much and I have worked hard to raise her. Even the odd jobs I do, I do for Sharon," she divulged.

Ms Omina added that she coud not dismiss the notion that the girls may have been switched at birth, adding that there was a high possibility.

"The nurses just gave me the baby to glance over when she was born before whisking her away to the nurser due to the fact that she was born prematurely," she disclosed.

In yet another twist, Melvis (the other girl who was raised in Kakamega as Melon's twin) bears a startling resemblance to Ms Omina, down to their skin-tones.

Parents on both ends stated that they were eagerly pursuing the truth as the children were starting to show signs of stress.
