Sonko Issues Emergency Numbers as Heavy Rains Hit Nairobi

Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko, on Tuesday, sent out emergency response numbers to the public following the onset of heavy rains within the Kenyan capital.

The governor also reassured the county residents that during life-threatening situations, a call to either of the numbers issued would guarantee a swift response.

"In case of flooding or any other emergency within the estates and neighbourhoods in Nairobi City County, do not hesitate to call or SMS these numbers; 0722886600, 0722156700, 0722732330, 0722832930," Sonko tweeted.

Sonko went on to share several images showing the various emergency response vehicles at his government's disposal as well as personnel.

The move follows the recent downpour experienced in various estates across Nairobi, with residents of Kahawa Wendani and Githurai 44 while affirming that heavy rains had pounded their environs during the Easter weekend.

Several households and roads were submerged during 2018's long rains in March, leading to the loss of property worth millions of shillings.

Encroachment and obstruction of riparian reserves, natural watercourses, drainage wayleaves and denial of access to drainage outfalls was mentioned as one of the main reasons why several areas in Nairobi are prone to floods.

However, following the recent repossession of riparian land as well as unclogging of various drainage systems across the county, Sonko's government remained hopeful that similar disastrous floods would be averted.

“As we anticipate for the long rains, my administration will not allow those who pollute our environment to go scot-free. We are going to fully enforce the Nairobi City County Solid Waste Management Act 2015 to ensure we keep our environment clean and safer to avoid clogging of the drainage systems that eventually lead to flooding and disasters,” Sonko revealed on April 16, 2019.

The county had earlier this month highlighted several areas within the city that were highly susceptible to damages resulting from heavy rains.

They included: Mukuru, Kibera slums, Kileleshwa, Highrise estate, Umoja, Eastleigh, South C, South B, Nairobi West, Lang’ata, Eastleigh, Donholm, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Ruai and Utawala.
