Kenyans to Still Use IDs Despite Having Huduma Namba

Kenyans who will have registered for the National Integrated Identity System (NIIMS) number will still be required to carry their national identification cards.

Planning Principal Secretary, Julius Muia, stated that the Huduma Namba will also not phase out other cards such as the National Hospital Insurance Fund card and the National Social Security Fund among others.

Muia was speaking at Kinyambu market in Makueni county while overseeing the Huduma Namba registration at the station.

He added that young Huduma Namba holders will be able to access the national IDs easier compared to those who will not have registered.

"The available database will have indicated that the applicants have attained 18 years and therefore have qualified for identity cards by the time they apply for the identity cards," the PS stated.

Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, in a past interview, stated that the Huduma Namba would help the Government identify the Kenyans that do not have identity cards.

According to the CS, the Government has put in place measures through the offices of County and Deputy County Commissioners, chiefs and their assistants, to ensure that any Kenyan without an ID card or birth certificate will finally get one.

“By the end of the 45-day registration period, any Kenyan who’ll have applied for the identifying documents will have them,” he stated in a past interview.

The Huduma Namba is meant to consolidate Kenyans’ information and store it in a digital registry for quicker service delivery.

"When seeking Government services, there is a process that Kenyans have been subjected to. This is where they are told that their files cannot be traced or they are lost, sometimes people are told to come after a week. With a Huduma Namba, service delivery will be faster since an individual’s information will be digitized,” Matiang'i noted.
