Sonko Blasted Over Ksh400M Bursary Pledge That Never Was

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is once again on the receiving end after Members of the Nairobi County Assembly (MCAs) accused him of not honouring a Ksh400 million bursary pledge he made on April 2.

According to the house's Minority Whip Peter Imwatok, the governor awarded them empty baskets during a line up at City Hall with a promise that the actual funds would be transferred electronically to curb corruption.

The funds never arrived.

“The legislators were lied to when they were paraded and given empty baskets written their ward's name at City Hall. Up to date, our residents at the wards have not received any funds,” stated Imwatok.

The bursary was meant to help over 4,000 needy students in schools across the 85 wards in the city.

Imwatok's sentiments were echoed by Imara Daima MCA Kennedy Obuya and Dandora 4 MCA Francis Otieno who claimed that they could no longer walk freely in the wards they command.

“As ward reps, we do not have a definite answer to give our people because the executive is not giving us a clear explanation on what is going on,” stated Obuya.

"It has been difficult for us to even walk in our wards. We told parents that the bursary money has been sent directly to the school accounts but up to now no money has been received," added Otieno.

This comes just a day after a video of the flamboyant governor purchasing high-end Versace-branded necklaces estimated at Ksh4.3 million surfaced online.

"I want big chains ingrained with diamond. Big chains are good. I am a fan of gold and Versace,” Sonko can be heard stating.
