How Lawyer in Kidero's Graft Case Met His Death

Stephen Kariuki Mburu, an advocate at Wachira Mburu and Company Advocates has been mentioned adversely in the Ksh68 million graft case facing Evans Kidero, the former Nairobi Governor.

Reports by The Star indicated that the advocate died mysteriously in a guest house in Oloitokitok on July 27, 2018, and that detectives suspect the death was linked to the Ksh68 million transactions.

An autopsy report of the lawyer, by the Chief Government pathologist, Johansen Oduor, stated that he could have died of a heart-related complication.

The report also cited that a detailed history and toxicological report was being awaited so that it could establish that the lawyer was not poisoned.

The late Mburu had been instructed by Aduma Owuor, the former AG Director Legal Affairs and now an MP of Nyakach constituency, to act on behalf of the city council without following the right procedure.

The publication also reported that Mburu's firm was the channel used in the looting before it was passed to various people including the former governor.

In a statement by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, Kidero and the former chief of staff, George Maina, were apprehended following irregular payment of Ksh68 million by the Nairobi City Government to Wachira Mburu, Mwangi and company advocates.

The money was allegedly paid in two installments of Ksh10 million and Ksh8 million between June of 2011 and January of 2014.

Investigations revealed that no services had been rendered to the county following the payments, hence, the entire amount is said to have been embezzled.

Kidero and his co-accussed are being charged with five offenses; conspiracy to commit corruption offenses, unlawful acquisition of property, abuse of office, dealing with suspect property and money laundering.
