Facebook Deletes "Hessy wa Dandora" Page After BBC Feature

Facebook has deleted ‘Dandora Crime Free’ page that was heavily linked to the shadowy crime buster ‘Hessy wa Dandora’.

This was prompted by a BBC feature story that was tagged ‘how Facebook is used to profile and kill Kenyan gangsters’.

A suspected death squad operating inside Kenya’s police force is using Facebook to target and kill young men they believe to be gang members, residents of a poor and overcrowded area of the capital have told a public meeting,” read part of the article.

It was reported that ‘Hessy wa Dandora’ took to 'Maliza Crime Mtaani' page to break the news stating how the deleted page had been instrumental to neutralize the dreaded Gaza gang at the same time protesting the move.

I personally do this because I have the passion of fighting violent crimes within Nairobi and its environs. No one has ever refunded me all this money and no one will ever do it,” Hessy revealed.

Former Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett had denied that the police were behind the famous crime-fighting character.

The person behind the Facebook accounts is not a police officer, but a civilian passionate about security matters,” Boinett stated.

BBC went on to state that Duncan Omanga, a researcher at Moi University in Kenya, who has been monitoring such Facebook pages for three years, highlighted that suspected police officers use anonymous digital personas to spy on their targets.

The feature went on to reveal that the group had more than 300,000 members and had the slogan: "Forgiving a terrorist is left to God, but fixing their appointment with God is our responsibility", along with the logo of an unidentified man wearing army combat uniform and a beret.

After being profiled, several young men have gone into hiding or have sought protection from human rights organisations.
