Media Council Exposes Biggest Source of Fake News

The Media Council of Kenya has revealed the biggest source of fake news in Kenya.

In a report released by the council on Thursday, Social Media emerged the leading source of fake news at 36 per cent of falsified reports with radio stations coming in second at 28 per cent.

Television, the Internet and newspapers followed at 20, 9 and 7 per cent respectively.

Social Media users are susceptible to receiving misleading information because netizens have limited capability to fact check what other users post.

Radio stations, particularly those that broadcast in vernacular, are on the spot even as their audience continues to grow.

FM stations are notorious for broadcasting unconfirmed advertisements where their listeners fall for con games.

They were also accused of discussing subjects such as witchcraft, betting, and sex-motivated topics.

"We are receiving complaints daily on the misuse of airtime by community radios,” MCK Chief Executive David Omwoyo stated.

He added that angered listeners were constantly asking the council to crack down on media stations.

MCK has written warning letters to some radio presenters and will get authorities to act against those promoting sex talk on the radio.
