Gov Mutua Shuts Down Shalom Hospital

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua ordered for the closure of Shalom Community Hospital on Monday afternoon following the death of a seven-month-old baby on Sunday at the facility.

Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacist and Dentist Board CEO Daniel Yumbya also withdrew Shalom hospital's operating license over the incident.

Reports also indicate that the Managing Director at the hospital was also arrested.

The Governor gave 48 hours for the patients to be discharged and transferred to other hospitals.

"My government has hereby revoked the business permit for the Hospital and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board has also revoked Shalom Hospital's operational License," the governor stated.

Earlier in the day, there were demonstrations in Machakos town following the death of baby Ethan Muendo who was injected by a nurse at the facility and died moments later.

Muendo's parents had taken him to the facility after he got minor burns from a water dispenser.

"It wasn't that serious, it was a tiny boil, I wondered why they decided to administer strong painkillers, instead of giving him a light painkiller, they gave him morphine," Jonathan Musau, the boy's father stated.

Two nurses have been arrested and taken to the Machakos Police Station.

Two weeks ago, a video emerged online of a woman giving birth at the reception of Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River as nurses who were on break watched.

The man who filmed the video had taken his wife for treatment when he noticed the bizarre incident.

“So as I was seated waiting for my wife to be attended to, an older woman is rushed in on a wheelchair. There are three nurses on the table taking tea, they seem not to bother about the woman despite being notified it’s an emergency case. So the woman pleads with one of them ‘haki nisaidie (please help me)’ one of the nurses told her to get up and walk,” he narrated.

Since nobody was helping her, the man volunteered to help her access the services.
