Homa Bay County Executive Facing Sack After Swindling Ksh9.6M Sports Fund

Homa Bay County Sports and Tourism executive Fredrik Odero is reportedly facing the sack after MCAs accused him of incompetence, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The Ward Representatives want Governor Cyprian Awiti to sack Odero with immediate effect for allegedly embezzling Ksh9.6 million allocated for county sports tournament.

“The executive has engaged in gross abuse of office hence cannot serve the people of Homa Bay. We direct the governor to dismiss him,” Rusinga MCA Okuku Miregi stated in a report tabled during the passage of the motion last Friday.

According to the MCAs, Odero had engaged in gross abuse of office hence cannot serve the people of Homa Bay.

The MCAs gave the governor till this week to sack the executive failure to which they will take unspecified measures.

The MCAs want another competent individual to be appointed to head the sports docket.

“We need sanity in the county hence we cannot allow Odero to continue holding the office after embezzling millions of public funds,” Chief Whip Richard Ogindo stated.

In the MCAs’ approvals, each of the 40 wards was allocated Ksh240,000, but Odero is reported to have changed the allocation from Ksh240,000 to Ksh45,000 per ward.

Odero is also accused of sidelining ward administrators who were supposed to handle the funds and instead, appointed strangers to handle the funds.

“It is wrong for the executive to appoint strangers to handle public funds. This is incompetence and abuse of office,”  Miregi stated.
