Gov Waititu Arrested [VIDEO]

EACC detectives, on Thursday, arrested Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu after conducting coordinated raids on his homes.

After the raid on his Runda residence, the county head was bundled into the EACC van and taken to Integrity Centre for questioning.

The detectives took away records relating to contracts issued by the governor as well as some number plates found in the boot of his Toyota Prado.

Earlier in the morning, the sleuths had stormed two of his Nairobi homes in a 6-hour operation to gather evidence.

The detectives searched his homes in Runda and Garden Estate for documents in connection to corruption in Kiambu County Government. 

In a statement to newsrooms, EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak revealed that their investigating allegations of irregular award of tenders valued at Ksh588 Million to companies associated with Kiambu County, Governor Waititu and members of his immediate family.

"Preliminary investigations show that contractors paid monies to senior county officials, their companies or relatives through proxies.

"As part of the ongoing investigation, search operations were conducted by EACC on 23rd May 2019 in the homes and offices of the Kiambu County Governor, his family members, directors of private companies and ten senior employees of the county government," Mbarak noted.

The outspoken governor is under the EACC radar over alleged corruption in a number of his county programmes, including Kaa Sober, which was aimed at rehabilitating alcoholics.
