A petition filed at the High Court intimates that the Auditor General Edward Ouko should be audited as there is a possibility of his office having spent billions of shillings illegally in unaccounted expenditure since his appointment in 2014.
Transparency International (TI), led by seasoned lawyer Dr. John Khaminiwa, argues that it is time the auditing office be put under scrutiny just like all the other government offices.
“Money used by the Auditor General’s office comes from the public purse. The auditor must be held accountable,” stated TI lawyer John Khaminwa.
TI calls for the National Assembly to recruit a skilled auditor to ransack the AG's office.
Khaminiwa stated that the controller of budget should not approve any appropriation of funds to the aforementioned office until a sound and proper scrutiny of the financial reports are checked and reconciled.
"Auditor General Ouko's term is set to end this August and it is imperative that this audit be done before he leaves office," he opined.
The lawyer thus urged the court to hearken to the petition with urgency.
The auditor general has been auditing financial accounts of the national government, county governments and State corporations, often giving shocking reports of misuse of funds.
Never before has anyone ever filed for the auditing of the auditor's office since the inception of the new constitution in 2010.
This petition comes a few weeks after the auditor's reports on several counties across the nation provided evidence of great inconsistencies in the use of finances by governors.
