Inside MP's Plan to End Church Fundraisers

Suna West MP, Peter Masara, is seeking support from his National Assembly colleagues in his quest to have churches listed as beneficiaries of the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).

The drafted Bill was handed to the Speaker of the House, Justin Muturi, two weeks ago and it is awaiting publishing.

This Bill seeks to amend section 25, part 3 and 4 of the NG-CDF that restricts the government from funding religious bodies.

"It is high time we have religious bodies be listed as beneficiaries as most of them run education and health facilities that are crucial to our development," the legislator stated.

Politicians have recently been on the receiving end with blasts from both the clerics and citizens for using church fund raising events as platforms to propel their political agenda.

Should the bill be passed to law, religious bodies will now be formal recipients of the government's goodies as two percent of the kitty's fund will be channelled to them.

"The money shall not be used to support political bodies or political activities but strictly for the improvement of religious activities in the nation," the MP told The Nation.

Mr. Masara stated that for long, leaders have neglected the needs of religious bodies and only go there to seek advice and divine intervention.

He added that this new mode of funding religious bodies will not add any expenses on the public funds as the amount will be drawn from the initial kitty's budgets.

Churches, together with mosques and temples will benefit from this amendment.
