Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has declared the vital role he hopes to play in the succession race come 2022 polls.
Speaking in Laikipia and Nyeri counties on Friday while distributing avocado seedlings to the local farmers, the CS revealed his interest in being the deputy president of the nation.
“2022 elections will be here soon and we need to be prepared. Some have tried to soil my name before the president but my work speaks for itself,” stated the CS.
He had earlier on, affirmed to Laikipia residents that his support for Deputy President William Ruto's presidential candidature in 2022 was still intact.
The CS used this opportunity to clarify that he would not challenge Laikipia Governor Nderitu Muriithi in the next elections.
Kiunjuri was accompanied by Nyeri Woman Representative Rahab Mukami, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, Speaker Patrick Waigwa and MCAs from Laikipia and Nyeri counties.
“We are telling Dr Ruto that if we (Jubilee Party) are giving him the presidential candidacy, the DP’s position should be reserved for CS Kiunjuri,” declared Mukami.
The woman rep termed the corruption allegations against the CS as ‘political noise’ meant to tarnish his reputation.
Laikipia county assembly speaker, Waigwa called on Mt Kenya leaders to put their house in order to have a better bargaining platform ahead of 2022.
“We need to strategize and put personal interests aside. We are sending our son Kiunjuri to organise Mt Kenya so that we will read from one script when others will be seeking for our support,” disclosed Speaker Waigwa.
Laikipia Senator Kinyua on his part noted that the CS is best placed to be Mt Kenya’s point man owing to his political clout.
In 2017, Kiunjuri shelved his bid to head Laikipia County, following the request of President Kenyatta and was later on appointed as the CS for Agriculture.
