Suspect Steals Two G3 Rifles After Escaping Police Custody

A 26-year-old man has escaped police custody making away with two G3 rifles in Liter police post, Marakwet East Sub-County in Elgeyo Marakwet.

The suspect, named Abel Kilimo Rop, was brought to the police post by his brothers and was being held for the offense of stealing and threatening to commit suicide.

Reports indicate he escaped on Tuesday at 12.50 pm from the police cell.

An officer from the station speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on condition of anonymity stated that it could be an inside job owing to the difficulty a stranger has to undergo to access such firearms.

A manhunt has been launched by the police in the region.

Police across the nation were sent briefings on the incident and are all on high alert to in a bid to nab the culprit who is believed to be mentally disturbed.

Cases of suspects fleeing from police stations are very rare and the presence of the guns in the public pose a great risk to innocent citizens.

This incident comes after three G-3 rifles and a magazine with 20 rounds of ammunition were stolen last month from officers manning a police post in Nandi.

Kenyans are urged to report any suspicious activities they witness to their nearest police stations.
