Governor Narrates How Gunmen Terrified Him at County Offices

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has finally opened up about a security drill that caused him to panic at his office in 2018.

Speaking during a Nyeri county countering violent extremism consultative meeting held in a hotel in the town, the governor stated that the gunmen smuggled the weapons into the county offices compound before proceeding to his office.

He disclosed that he was shocked by how the people who were conducting the drill gained access to the compound bypassing six armed officers.

He further disclosed that while chatting with them, he had thought that they were carrying cameras in their bags until they showed him the guns, bullets and grenades.

“The team came and passed all security checks, gained entry into the county government offices compound until they got into my office.

“I thought they were carrying cameras but what I saw sent shivers down my spine. They were grenades and guns,” The Star quoted the Governor.

They also informed the governor that they had gained access to his office carrying equipment capable of causing disaster to himself and his surrounding.

“They kept all those weapons on my table and I wondered whether I should have my security team replaced,” he continued.

The drill was reportedly aimed at checking the county's state of security especially since the county connects parts of Eastern and North Eastern regions hence it is exposed to terrorism activities and is a possible target for conducting radicalisation.

“Solutions to problems of violent extremism are not in Nairobi but with the local people on the ground. It is time we look for homegrown solutions,” he remarked.
