ODM Chairman John Mbadi has tabled a bill seeking to limit donations made by public servants during fundraisers.
The bill, titled The Public Officer Ethics (Amendment) Bill, 2019, is aimed at limiting the donations to Ksh 100,000 without which the giver should explain its source to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) within 14 days.
Deputy President William Ruto and his camp are likely to suffer most considering his generous giving when he visits churches and schools around the country.
In April 2018, the DP dropped a whooping Ksh15 million as a donation to Murang'a High School for the construction of a multipurpose hall.
The DP then followed the generous donation a few months later with a Ksh3 million contribution to Mary Immaculate Primary School in Nanyuki and another Ksh5 million to Kairuri Catholic Parish in Embu county.
All the contributions have been the subject of harshed discussions across the country with many questioning the legitimacy of their sources.
According to Mbadi, his new proposal is set to end the splashing of cash around the country which is later traced back to corrupt activities.
The bill does not only limit the capping to the politicians themselves but also the donations made by their spouses and children on their behalf.
“The bill requires a public officer who contributes an amount exceeding Ksh100,000 to a public function to file a return with the commission stating the source of such funds for the public record and requires the commission to make all declarations, clarifications, and returns made by a public officer accessible to the public,” reads part of the bill.
