Kenyan Gay Rugby Player Takes UK's Publication Full Page to Appeal Deportation

A Kenyan rugby player, Ken Macharia, has appealed to the UK Home Affairs department on an online publication, The Guardian following a deportation letter that was issued to him.

In an open letter written on the publication's website, the rugby player stated that he was no longer welcome to the country and should make arrangements to leave or risk being deported.

He appealed to the Home Office of the Country to protect him from persecution when he learnt that he would be deported.

"As a gay man, whose country of birth, Kenya, persecutes homosexuals, I felt my whole world collapse around me," he stated.

He added that he feared moving back to Kenya where sexual intimacy had been outlawed for the gay people.

"Only last month, the high court upheld a law which criminalized gay sex and hangs a 14-year jail sentence over the heads of those who dare to have a relationship with someone they love," he noted.

Following his case being public, Macharia noted that he would be at a risk of extreme homophobia everywhere.

"Imagine being scared everywhere you went, being jobless, homeless and away from the place you know and call home- that would be my life in Kenya," he continued.

Macharia, who is part of a rugby team called Bristol Bison stated that he would walk to the police station surrounded by his teammates and other people who supported him.

"I’m not giving up hope. I know that even the most callous of government departments has human beings working in it," he added.
