Detectives Bust Presidential Aspirant With Electoral Forms

Kenyan detectives on Wednesday detained a man alleged to be a Somalia presidential candidate in Nairobi over suspicions of terrorism and unclear dealings with regards to the Somali general elections.

According to reports, the suspect, Ibrahim Kassim, was arrested at his house in South C by Anti-Terrorism Police Unit following a tip-off.

The detectives recovered a Djibouti passport, electoral commission forms, four mobile phones, an alien certificate and coloured copies of two Kenyan identity cards.

Kassim was arrested alongside three Kenyan nationals, Mohamud Mohamed Bashir, Ali Abdi Mohamed, and Hussein Hassan Muhammud.

The detectives disclosed that the four suspects were working with other associates who are yet to be apprehended.

The four suspects appeared before Principal Magistrate Peter Okoo at the Milimani Law Courts on Thursday where he directed that they be detained to allow the detectives to complete their investigations.

They will remain in custody for four days until when their case will be mentioned on June 12, 2019.

This year, the Horn of Africa nation that has been ravished by internal conflict for years is expected to conduct historic elections.

This will be the first time the country will hold one-person-one-vote polls since the country experienced a military coup in 1969.

This comes at a time when the Kenya-Somalia diplomatic meltdown over a disputed maritime border in the Indian Ocean is unfolding.
