Google on Wednesday recognised and celebrated the birthday of one of Kenya's legendary authors on their search engines home page.
They linked the profile of the late Margaret Ogola to their logo leading straight to her Wikipedia profile as a way of recognising her immense contribution to literature.
The author, who wrote among other books the re-known set book “The River and the Source” was born on June 12, 1958, in Asembo in the current Siaya County.
Despite her success in the literature world, Ogola was a trained medical doctor as she had earned her first degree, Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery, in 1984, from the University of Nairobi.
After graduation, she worked as a medical officer at Kenyatta National Hospital. In 1990, she earned her Masters of Medicine in Paediatrics at the University of Nairobi.
She has authored five known books which are The River and the Source, released in 1994, Cardinal Otunga: A Gift of Grace with Margaret Roche (1999), I Swear by Apollo (2002), Place of Destiny (2005), Narrator or "presenter" for The odds against us – but there’s hope (VHS videocassette) Nairobi: Ukweli Video Productions.
The River and the Source won the 1995 commonwealth winners prize for the best first book, Africa Region and has been in the KCSE syllabus for many years.
Ogola completed her final book, titled Mandate of the People, before her death and it is set to be released posthumously.
She was also the recipient of the Familias Award for Humanitarian Service of the World Congress of Families.
Sadly, the great author died on September 21, 2011, at the age of 53 in Nairobi.
