Women MPs Storm Out of Parliament Minutes Before Budget Reading

Women legislators staged a protest after staging a walkout from parliament on Thursday afternoon following the assault of Wajir County Woman Representative Fatuma Gedi.

The woman legislator had earlier on been allegedly attacked by the Wajir East MP Rashid Kassim after a heated argument.

She was in the company of her counterpart Homa Bay counterpart Gladys Wanga on their way to the protection house within the parliament.

National Assembly Speaker, Justin Muturi, was forced to direct the sergeant-at-arms to eject the protesting legislators who began chanting as the House convened ahead of the 2019/2020 budget reading.

“Sergeant-at-arms can you make sure the members at the door are thrown out,” directed the speaker as the MPs persisted with the shouting.

The agitated legislators continued chanting and the speaker had to order them out immediately.

“Get out… walk out!” shouted Speaker Muturi, as the sergeant-at-arms opened the door for the MPs to leave.

A fiery Wanga recounted the event to the press and expressed her distaste of the incidence.

"I was with Gedi as we headed to the protection house when the assault happened. We (women leaders) refuse to be treated in this manner. If a woman leader can be attacked here at the parliament area, what of our women in their homes?" She posed.

They continued chanting that they would not tolerate such behaviour from their male counterparts and urged the women nationally to refuse to be mistreated by men.

"Hatutanyanyaswa na wanaume, tumechoka (We will not be oppressed by men, we are tired)," they sang.

Wajir East MP, Rashid Khasim was arrested by the parliament police station officers.

The chaos lasted for less than half an hour as the women leaders trudged back to the National Assembly.

"Honorable members sit down and let's continue, it is not time for greetings and handshake," the speaker commanded when they got back into parliament.

This incident happened after the collapsed mediation talks between the senators and MPs in the morning over the Division of Revenue Bill that guides the allocation of funds to counties.
