Thugs Pump Bullets Into Police Constable and Wife

A police constable was on Saturday shot dead while his wife sustained serious injuries after they were attacked by two armed robbers.

The constable, identified as Erick Mwirigi, 34, was attacked together with his wife Gloria Ngatha in their house at EPZ area in Athi River, a town located in the outskirts of the Nairobi Metropolitan area.

The officer was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival to Nairobi Women's hospital in Kitengela. He was shot on the left side of the rib, neck and chest.

His wife is also receiving treatment in the same hospital after she was shot on the left-hand elbow.

Confirming the incident, Isinya sub-county commander Silas Ringera stated that officers who visited his house recovered three 9 mm spent cartridges.

“My officers also visited the hospital where they established that the deceased was shot at the left side of the chest, left side of neck, and left side of his rib,” he expressed.

He further added that the woman was robbed more than Ksh 10,000 and other valuables during the attack.

“The wife was robbed Sh9,300 in cash and Sh1,000 was transferred from her M-Pesa account. Two mobile phones an Alcatel and an iTel all valued at Sh20,000 were also stolen from them,” he continued.

Corroborating Ringera's story, Athi River deputy county commissioner David Juma revealed that he received a call from the officer's neighbour who reported the break-in.

"It was reported by a resident of EPZ that he received a call from a local who informed him that his neighbour Erick Mwirigi and his wife namely Gloria Ngatha had been shot by two armed men and had been rushed to Nairobi Women's Hospital," The Star quoted Juma.
