Details of Raila's 1st Contract Awarded by Jomo Kenyatta

Despite the deep-rooted rivalry that has dominated Kenya's politics, it appears the overly competitive nature among the politicians does not sip through to their personal lives.

Many jokes have been made about how the politicians only appear to fight in public but laugh with each other behind the scenes.

It is with this breath that Kenya's first President Jomo Kenyatta and former Prime Minister put aside their differences to work together despite the former having condemned Odinga's father to harsh conditions in detention.

It was in the early 1970s when Raila had just partnered with a German engineer Franz Schineis to establish a company in Kenya.

At that time, Raila had thought of a side hustle to supplement his salary working at The University of Nairobi (UoN).

The newly formed company dealt in the repair and maintenance of boilers and pressure vessels and after some time, it became a specialty.

The company did so well that Mzee Kenyatta approached him to install a Liquid petroleum Gas (LPG) tank at his farm in Gatundu, which Odinga did.

Like it still happens in businesses today, sometimes Raila's firm had to subcontract other stakeholders.

Smaller tanks were made by T. Singh & Co and EA Hydraulics & Industrial Plant while the larger ones were made by Steel Construction & Petroleum Engineering.

Most of Raila's job at the firm involved designing the concepts which he would send to the above-listed companies to produce.

In the course of installing the LGP tanks, he noticed that all of them were imported. Thus, he saw a business opportunity which culminated in Odinga establishing Spectre International, which to this day, manufactures gas cylinders locally.
