Magoha Forms Dream Team to End 8-4-4

Education Cabinet Secretary, Professor George Magoha on Friday appointed a team that would oversee the transition to the 2-6-3-3 education system.

The appointed team will consist of 17 members who would be led by Professor Fatuma Chege to facilitate the smooth transition of the same.

The establishment of the task force was for purposes of enhancing access, relevance, transition, equity and quality for effective curriculum reforms.

This comes after the tuff between Magoha and Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary-general Wilson Sossion over the implementation of the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The Taskforce comprised of the following: Professor Fatuma Chege as the chairperson, Professors Jack Too, Stephen Odebero, Winston Akala, Gabriel Katana, Rev. Fr. Joseph Mutie, Dr.s  Eldah Onsomu, Rev. Nelson Makanda, Adan Saman, Charles Ongondo, Glory K. Mutungi, Bakary Athman Chemaswet, Bakary Athman Chemaswet, Bakary Athman Chemaswet, Indimuli Kahi, Nicholas Gathemia, Muthoni Ouko, Nicholas Maiyo and Augusta Muthigani. 

According to the CS, the term of the Taskforce will be a period of one year effective from the date the Taskforce is gazetted. The period may, however, be extended if necessary.

The task force will be required to undertake broad stakeholder engagement, review literature and identify international best practices with a view to preparing a comprehensive advisor Report on the transition of Grade 6 cohort (of CBC) and Standard 7 and 8 (of 8-4-4) pupils in 2023 as well as the domiciling of Grade 7, 8 and 9 within the basic education structure.

They will also spearhead the Identification of schools that will host the Pathways and tracks in Senior Secondary school while considering equity and cost-effectiveness.

The task force is also expected to come up with strategies and work plans to prepare the country for implementation of Senior Secondary Pathways and tracks in 2026, including infrastructural and human resource requirements.

Conceptualization and design of competency-based pre-service teacher education.

Design and implementation of Values-Based Education; Community Service Learning; and Parental Empowerment and Engagement programs.

Finally, the team will put down infrastructural requirements and resources necessary for the transition from Basic to Tertiary education and training in 2029.
