President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Friday, was under siege from seemingly angry Kenyans after he asked doctors to work without pay.
Speaking during the late lawyer, Karanja Kabage's burial in Rongai, Nakuru County, Uhuru urged doctors to put the lives of Kenyans first even when payment was not on the table.
“If you are a doctor, do not say you will only wait for a salary and cannot work without being paid. Remember the life of your fellow Kenyan is more important than what you are paid,” the president told the congregation.
Kenyans were, however, not impressed with his utterances explaining that the logic in his statement could not apply in the Kenyan setting.
"Just the same way we should give milk on credit to the many Kenyans who can't afford it, calcium now, pay later! Their lives are more important," posted one Twitter user.
"If you are a shopkeeper, you should not only think about the profit but also give the doctor shopping without pay, first. Likewise, if you are a landlord, a matatu conductor or a head teacher in a school. Do this because doctors are serving without pay," expressed Kubai Winnie.
"On this one president, I beg to respectfully disagree with you because you're speaking from a position of privilege. People are struggling to make ends meet so that they can at least have a decent life," added Esbon Wambugu.
Others even compared the allowances some government officials pocket with what the president was suggesting and his own wealth.
"Uhuru, Raila and Ruto, you are busy creating financial empires using Kenyan money and then you tell doctors, teachers to work for free...why can't you work for free?...give them your salaries," stated another user.
"Comment on what your fellow politicians are doing to exploit us not going for the have nots you continue to exploit every day. Very annoying theory. Can you serve Kenyans without pay?" Questioned Willy Mwaura.
The funeral was also attended by Opposition Leader, Raila Odinga, and Nakuru Governor, Lee Kinyanjui.
The late Kabage was involved in a road crash on July 12, 2019, along the Southern Bypass in Nairobi, after he suffered a heart attack.
