Uhuru's Next Tough Move on Rogue Betting Firms [VIDEO]

President Uhuru Kenyatta has confirmed that there will be no backtracking on the reforms that the government is undertaking in the gambling industry.

Speaking on Saturday, while attending Ann Waiguru's wedding, Uhuru declared that the push to ensure compliance from the betting firms would be geared up.

He stated that the taxes betting firms are required to pay, are for development and the betterment of the country’s economy.

Uhuru affirmed that he will not revoke the government's decision to shut down the paybills and short codes for 27 of these firms until their licences are renewed.

The Head of state also noted that court processes are being used to frustrate the taxman and other regulatory agencies.

“The firms should stop threats that they will move to court. The government must get its share to fund activities that are beneficial to this country," he tersely remarked.

Uhuru asserted that the protesting betting firms had to tow the line regarding the issue of tax compliance and he will not relent to ensure that they pay up their dues.

"Some firms have been hoarding taxes but we have managed to push them to pay and we will continue doing so. Those in the betting companies are our friends but we have to agree that the government must get its rightful share to build cultural centers and other developments," the nation's boss added.

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i issued a directive ordering the shutting down of paybills and short codes belonging to multiple betting firms in the country, last week.

This move was met with outrage as the gambling companies lodged their complaints, stating that they had met all the requisite conditions to operate in the country, including tax compliance by paying their dues to the government.
